About, privacy & disclaimer
What this is
windroute is a small hobby project that suggests wind-aware cycling routes. It was built quickly with heavy AI assistance (“vibecoded”) and is shared as-is for fun. It is not a commercial product and comes with no warranty of any kind.
Ride-safety disclaimer
- Routes are produced by an algorithm from imperfect map data. They may route you onto busy roads, the wrong way down one-way streets, gravel, private property, closed roads, or simply be wrong.
- Always review a route and check current road, traffic, and weather conditions before you ride. Treat the suggestion as a starting point, not turn-by-turn gospel.
- Wind, surface, and elevation figures are estimates and can be stale or inaccurate.
- You ride entirely at your own risk. The author accepts no liability for any loss, injury, or damage arising from use of this site.
Privacy
This site is deliberately minimal about data:
- No accounts, no passwords, no cookies, no analytics or trackers, and no database. Nothing you enter is sold or shared for advertising.
- What you enter (start location, distance, time, ride type, and options) is used only to build your routes for that one request.
- Third-party lookups. To plan a route, your start location and the coordinates derived from it are sent to the external services that do the actual geocoding, weather, routing, and map-data work: OpenRouteService (routing), Open-Meteo and the US National Weather Service (wind), OpenStreetMap Nominatim (address geocoding), Photon by komoot (the address suggestions while you type: what you type is sent as you type it), and the Overpass API (road surface, speed-limit and bike-lane data). These requests go from this server, not your browser. Each service has its own privacy policy.
- Map tiles. Your browser loads the map images directly from OpenStreetMap, CyclOSM (OpenStreetMap France) or OpenTopoMap, depending on the map style, so those servers see your IP address and the map area you view.
- Stored in your browser only. Your recent start points, your last map position, your map style and (only if the site asks for one) the Ride with GPS passphrase are saved in this browser (localStorage) so the form remembers them. Nothing here is sent anywhere, except the passphrase, which goes to this site when you send a route. Clear your site data to remove them.
- “Send to Ride with GPS” (when shown) uploads that route to the site owner’s Ride with GPS account and makes it public there, including where it starts. Only use it on routes you’re happy to share.
- Generated files. The route maps and GPX files made for your request are written to the server temporarily and automatically deleted after about an hour. They are served over an unguessable link but are not otherwise access-controlled, so treat them as semi-public while they exist.
- Server logs. The hosting provider may keep standard access logs (such as IP address, timestamp, and the request) for reliability and to prevent abuse.
- Your call on precision. You don’t need to enter your exact home address — a nearby town, intersection, or trailhead works fine, and that’s all that gets sent to the services above.
